Anyone who has naturally curly hair has probably heard friends say to them, “I wish my hair was curly like yours”. However, with curly hair comes great responsibility as it takes a lot of work to make curls look their best. Here is some advice from a gal with curls since I want to keep you from making all the curly hair mistakes I have made and I want you to look your best.
Hair Don’t: Avoiding The Hair Dryer
Hair Do: Use The Diffuser
The ideal way to dry curly hair is to let nature take its course, but if you are in a hurry, it is possible to use the hair dryer safely. Use the diffuser attachment that comes with it because it will distribute the heat in a more even manner than a regular dryer. Turn the heat way down, or you can turn it off all together. Heat isn’t good for curly hair.
Hair Don’t: Avoiding Hair Cuts
Hair Do: Get A Hairstylist Who Understands Curly Hair
Even if you don’t think you need a regular haircut, it helps keep your curls beautiful. A regular hair trim will keep your ends looking healthy and keep your curls from being pulled down by their weight. The best tip is to get a hairstylist who knows how to deal with hair that has natural curls.
Hair Don’t: Washing Your Hair Daily
Hair Do: Use Renewing Spray
You may think it’s a good idea to wash your hair daily so your curls can bounce back freshly but all that washing can make your strands get dried out and lose their natural oils. Give life to your curly hair without daily washing by spritzing it with water occasionally to refresh it. You might also try co-washing to see if it works for you. Some gals with curly hair find this is perfect for them and they have stopped with the suds totally.
Hair Don’t: Owning A Hairbrush
Hair Do: Using A Wide-Toothed Comb
If your hair is naturally curly, you should not be using a hairbrush. If your hair gets tangled and you need help to get the tangles out, use a wide-toothed comb when you shower to gently remove the tangles before you rinse the conditioner out of your hair.
Hair Don’t: Running Your Fingers Through The Hair
Hair Do: Use Your Fingers For Styling Your Curls
Once you have gotten your curls styled the way you like them, don’t run your fingers through them whenever you get bored or anxious. This causes your curls to lose their definition and the hair strands will get separated and frizzy. You can use the rake and shake technique instead (apply product with fingers and rake it through your wet hair; shake you hands sideways when you reach the ends) to encourage your hair to form curls naturally.
